Cookie policy

What this website stores on your device, why, and how to control it. Two things: a theme preference that identifies nothing, and a live chat widget that sets a device identifier of its own.

Effective: 1 August 2026

What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise your device on a later visit. Related technologies — localStorage, session storage — do a similar job and are covered here too.

Cookies that are strictly necessary to deliver a service you asked for can be set without permission. Anything else, including analytics, needs your consent first.

What this site stores today

Your theme preference

When you switch between light and dark, we remember the choice in your browser's localStorage under the key "theme". It never leaves your device, is not sent to us, and identifies nothing about you. Clearing your browser storage removes it and the site returns to its default.

The live chat window

The chat window in the corner of the page is run for us by Tawk.to, so you can ask a question without writing an email. It loads on every page, and it sets cookies and browser storage of its own:

  • a persistent identifier, so a conversation follows you from one page to the next and is still yours if you come back another day;
  • a record of when the chat last connected;
  • the conversation itself, held in browser storage so a reload does not lose what you typed.

Those are set by Tawk.to rather than by us, on their infrastructure and under their privacy policy. We will be plain about the position: a chat window you have opened is a service you asked for, but one that loads on every page before you have asked for anything is closer to something you should be able to refuse first. We would rather write that down than describe it as strictly necessary.

Nothing else

This site sets no advertising cookies, no social media cookies, and at present no analytics cookies.

Analytics, when we add it

We intend to add Google Analytics so we can see which pages are useful and where people give up. It is not installed yet, and this section describes what will happen when it is rather than what is happening now.

Google Analytics sets cookies that distinguish one visitor from another and record which pages were viewed. That is not strictly necessary to deliver this website, so when it goes in:

  • it will not run until you have agreed to it;
  • a consent banner will ask first, with refusing as easy as accepting;
  • you will be able to change your mind later from this page;
  • the cookies it sets, and how long each lasts, will be listed here before it goes live;
  • data is sent to Google, which may process it outside the UK — the transfer safeguard we rely on is described in our Privacy policy.

Until that is in place, no analytics cookie is set on this site.

Controlling cookies

Every major browser lets you see what a site has stored, delete it, and block future cookies. Those controls are usually under privacy or site settings, and apply whatever a site's own banner says.

Blocking storage on this site costs you two things: the site will not remember whether you chose light or dark, and the chat window will not work. Everything else is unaffected. Blocking third-party storage alone stops the chat widget and leaves the theme preference working.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page whenever what we store changes, and before a change takes effect rather than after it. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
